Marianne Sorensen

Hello, and thanks for navigating to this page to learn more about me. My name is Marianne Sorensen, and I am a shareholder at Jones Waldo Holbrook & McDonough, PC, which has its main office in Salt Lake City, Utah. I am the associate managing partner of the St. George, Utah, office.

I spent most of my childhood 150 miles “up the road” from here (in Richfield, Utah), but lived in the Salt Lake City area for about 20 years, attending law school at the University of Utah and working in the Salt Lake office of Jones Waldo from 1998 to 2007.  Having grown weary of the cold and snow, I moved south with my family in November, 2007 – back to the red hills, fresh air and sunshine that are ubiquitous here. It’s been a wonderful move, with no regrets.I’m involved in the community and I enjoy the lifestyle and the great people of southern Utah.

Here in St. George, I continue to work in the commercial real estate arena, assisting clients with ground leases, office leases, purchase and sale transactions, site development, restrictive covenants, boundary disputes, etc.  General business and commercial matters make up a large part of my practice as well.  I enjoy advising clients with regard to advertising, marketing and promotions law and privacy and e-commerce issues. Working with entrepreneurs and new businesses to make sure they get off to a good start in legal matters provides me with a great deal of satisfaction.

What I find amazing is that from my base in this small resort-type town, I am able to do very interesting international work. With technology and a bit of scheduling flexibility, a workday can include projects in Australia, Europe, Canada and China.

The economic conditions of 2009 have resulted in demand for help with foreclosures and loan workouts, as well as buy-outs and business reorganizations, with which we are heavily involved. I see first-hand the effects of the economy on our hardworking clients, and my colleagues and I are very aware of the need to keep costs down while providing top-notch service. We try hard to add value for our clients and the community, knowing that this is the way to build loyalty that will last when the economy is once again thriving.

Things That Make Me Unique

  • My sense of curiosity is alive and well, so I’m seldom bored. Given some free time and a fast connection, I could entertain myself for hours with a laptop, just moving from one esoteric bit of information to the next. I find dictionaries hard to put down. I love bookstores and libraries.
  •  I like to work. Really.
  • I have a sense of humor which I’ve been exercising for years in hopes that it keeps my brain flexible. I laugh to myself while driving (but only when appropriate). I often wonder why I’m the only one in a theater to laugh out loud during the funniest scenes.
  • I can ride a unicycle. I once rode a calf in a junior rodeo. And I think it would be a great deal of fun to be a trapeze artist.
  • My ideal vacation setting would include a beach.
  • I’ve ridden a camel in Egypt, shared tea with Bedouins in Saudi Arabia, fended off a curious young man in a public restroom in the Middle East with an M-16, eaten sushi in Japan and Italian ice cream in Germany. Not to mention sipping Grade AAA Imperial Most Special White Tea at a tea plantation in China.
  • I dabble in social media. Twitter – @happyattorney
